Scrum - Sprint Planning

Let’s take a closer look at the Sprint Planning ceremony inorder to better understand what happens, who’s involved, and what the expected outcomes are.

1. What’s sprint planning?

Sprint planning is a meeting where the scrum team comes together to define and prioritize the work to be completed during the upcoming sprint.

2. When does it occur?

Sprint planning occurs at the beginning of the sprint. This is the first ceremony of each sprint.

3. Who is involved?

Sprint planning involves the Scrum Team, which includes:

  • 👉 Product owner: defines the sprint goal and prioritizes product backlog items
  • 👉 Scrum master: facilitates the meeting and ensures Scrum principiles are followed
  • 👉 Developement team: selects backlog items, estimates effort, and plan the work needed to achive the sprint

4. How long is this meeting

Sprint planning ceremony is typically 1 hour, but it all depends on the environment and nature of the project.

5. What’s the expected outcome of this meeting

By the end of this meeting, the scrum team should know the sprint goal; what are we trying to achieve and who will be working on which tasks. Here’re more details:

  • ✅ Defined sprint goal: a clear objective that guides the team throughout the sprint.
  • ✅ Committed pprint backlog: a prioritized list of tasks (user stories) the team will complete during the sprint.
  • ✅ Capacity and velocity alignment: ensuring the planned work aligns with the team’s availablility and other commitments.
  • ✅ Clarity on deliverables: the team understands what success looks like by the end of the sprint.
